Sunday, May 19th
3-5 p.m

Lyme Disease and its Naturopathic Treatment

Lyme disease, particularly prevalent in New England, is rapidly becoming a national epidemic, yet people are often frustrated in their search for effective, affordable treatment for their symptoms, which can run the gamut from extremely mild to quite debilitating. Many other people, whose seemingly puzzling array of symptoms has eluded medical diagnosis may be especially unsure of where to turn and may be prescribed a cornucopia of drugs that miss the real problem. Moreover, Lyme disease seldom occurs on its own but is often accompanied by other tick-borne infections like babesiosis, ehrlichiosis, and bartonella.

Fortunately, there are many tools in the toolkit of natural medicine that can effectively address both Lyme disease and its co-infections, even when symptoms have been present for a long time. Join naturopathic physician Dr. Chris Decker for an enlightening discussion about Lyme disease, how to tell if you have it, and how to successfully treat it if you do.

Sacro Occipital Technique

What is SOT- sacro occipital technique?

Sacro Occipital Technique goes beyond simple spinal adjustments to include methods of correcting the Cranium, Pelvis, Extremities and Organs. SOT brings about a system of adjusting patterns in the body, not just single body parts. The most significant pattern is the relationship between the sacrum and occiput (which became the name of the technique). In addition to the correction of the spinal subluxations, SOT includes visceral manipulation procedures. Visceral procedures are used to help normalize organ function without the use of drugs or surgery. SOT also recognizes the important role of normal cranial function in health and disease. The cranial bones and other cranial structures can cause central nervous system problems that are often overlooked or ignored by most other chiropractic systems.

Jim Rizzo’s been practicing chiropractic medicine since graduating from New York Chiropractic College in 1994. In addition to a degree in chiropractic, he also holds a graduate degree in nutrition from the University of Bridgeport and has taught nutrition at the college level for over 10 years. Jim’s done community talks and written articles covering a wide variety of topics such as chiropractic, nutritional considerations to weight management, stress management, and more.

There are probably hundreds of techniques that are under the umbrella of chiropractic and therefore chiropractors tend to practice in many different ways. In almost 20 years as a chiropractor, Jim has spent the majority of that time studying SOT, sacro-occipital technique. The school of thought with this technique is that the spinal column, made up of flat, round bones stacked on top of each other, is a compensatory mechanism. It is designed to adapt and compensate. Therefore any fixations or restrictions in vertebral column are secondary to a primary fixation somewhere else in the body. Primary fixations are usually found in the sacrum and/or cranium hence the name, sacro-occipital technique. Often extremities or visceral organs play a role as well. Fixations that occur in the vertebral column, as well as any joint in the body, result in pain and inflammation. An SOT visit will consist of an assessment that may include the cranium, sacrum, and extremities as well as the vertebral column.

In addition to his work as a chiropractor, clinical nutritionist, and educator, Jim enjoys the wide range of outdoor activities that Vermont has to offer such as hiking, biking and snowshoeing. His hobbies also include writing, in which he is a published author of young adult fiction, and volunteering where he has worked in Croatia and Haiti.

“My personal belief when it comes to healthcare is that people respond optimally when they consider that there are multiple and complementary approaches. If we limit ourselves with an approach we also limit the possible outcomes.”

Being apart of people’s healing for the past four years has been incredibly rewarding for me. Each person is unique in their needs for healing. It is my job to discover what those needs are so we can work together to achieve your wellness goals.

After graduating from the Stillpoint Program in Greenfield, Massachusetts I worked with several Chiropractors in the Chicagoland area. After this work sharpened my critical thinking and technique I began my own practice and collaborated with other therapists exchanging ideas and techniques to continue growing. I use a listening touch and based on what I “hear” your body telling me I draw from a variety of techniques including Swedish, deep tissue, trigger point, yoga inspired stretching, and other movement therapies to create a treatment tailored to your needs.
