What is Community Acupuncture?

Community acupuncture allows several people to be treated in the same room at once, while reclining in comfortable chairs. This enables us to reduce the cost of treatment, which in turn helps acupuncture be more affordable and may help you get the number and frequency of treatments that you may need to get better.  This model is wonderful in many ways and is becoming quite popular in the U.S., with big community acupuncture clinics springing up all over the place. This style is really more similar to the way acupuncture is practiced in China; there patients often come several times a week for weeks or months in a row depending on their condition, and patients are often treated together in chairs. Often the reason why acupuncture “doesn’t work” or why people think that acupuncture doesn’t work is because their condition really requires more treatments than they can afford or than they make time for. Acupuncture’s efficacy is greatly increased by receiving regular, more frequent treatments.  We love community acupuncture because it makes it easy for people to get treatments whenever they want, to be treated with their families and friends, to feel comfortable rather than isolated, and to create together a collective energetic field which makes the individual treatments more powerful and clinically effective.

What can I expect from my Community Acupuncture appointment?

You will be receiving your acupuncture treatment in a comfortable reclining chair in a quiet room along with other patients being treated in exactly the same style. You do not need to disrobe, you just need to roll your sleeves up to your elbows and your pants up to your knees. Many of the most powerful acupuncture points are located from elbow to hand and from knee to foot, and also on the scalp and in the ear. You and your acupuncturist will speak briefly before you get treated, to check in and to monitor progress.  Then he or she will put in the points most appropriate for your condition. Acupuncture needles are very, very small, and they should not hurt. One of the best parts about acupuncture is that it is very relaxing! Once the needles are in you will sit quietly for about 45 minutes to an hour. You may even fall asleep.

Acupuncture is a process. Every now and then, acupuncture will act like a “miracle cure”, and a person will have all of their symptoms disappear after only one treatment- but that is a rare event. Acupuncture works by stimulating the body’s own self- healing mechanisms; it is gentle and safe and usually gradual. Almost everyone who gets acupuncture needs a series of treatments to get good results, which is one reason why making acupuncture affordable is so important. Your acupuncturist will suggest a treatment plan to you, meaning how many treatments we think you will need to get good results; please let us know if you have any questions about your treatment plan, and please stick with it to the best of your ability.
